About Westerwald Stoneware
Westerwald is a region in Germany which has been making salt glazed stoneware, such as beer steins, for more than 400 years. These stoneware crocks, steins and other containers were a salt glazed, cobal blue color that is very attractive. In the days before canning was invented they were important as storage jars for holding fermented, pickled and salted foods for winter consumption.
They are also very heavy. The best ones we have found came from Germany, but the shipping cost to the USA is very painful.
On this website we will be showing a variety of this salt glazed stoneware which we have collected with pictures and links to books and auctions of this collectible. We also hope to have some discussion of how these old stoneware items were used to preserve and ferment foods in the days before refrigeration.
